Finding your washing machine full of water at the end of a cycle is frustrating. Clothes sitting in standing water can develop odors, and you can't move forward with your laundry. Here's how to troubleshoot a washer that won't drain.

Safety First

Before inspecting your washer:

- Unplug the machine or turn off the circuit breaker

  • Have towels ready — you may need to manually drain water
  • If there's a lot of water, consider using a wet/dry vacuum or bucking out water first

    Common Causes and Solutions

    Clogged Drain Hose

The drain hose carries water from your washer to the drain pipe or utility sink. It can become kinked, clogged, or positioned incorrectly.

    What to check:

  • Look for kinks in the hose
  • Make sure the hose isn't inserted too far into the standpipe (should be 6-8 inches)
  • Disconnect the hose and check for clogs from lint, coins, or small items
  • Run water through the hose to test for blockages

    Blocked Drain Pump Filter

Most washers have a filter that catches debris before it reaches the pump. This filter can get clogged with coins, buttons, hair ties, and lint.

    What to do:

  • Locate the filter (usually behind a small door at the front bottom of the washer)
  • Place a shallow pan and towels underneath — water will come out
  • Twist open the filter and clean out any debris
  • Check for small items like socks that may have gotten past the drum

    Faulty Drain Pump

The drain pump physically moves water out of your washer. If it fails, water has nowhere to go.

    Signs of pump problems:

  • Humming noise but no draining
  • Burning smell during drain cycle
  • Complete silence when the machine should be draining

Pump replacement typically requires a professional technician.

    Lid Switch Issues (Top-Load Washers)

Top-loading washers have a lid switch that prevents the machine from draining or spinning when the lid is open. If this switch fails, the washer may not drain even with the lid closed.

What to check: Try pressing and releasing the lid switch manually to see if you hear a click. A failed switch won't click or may feel loose.

    Too Much Detergent

Excessive suds can overwhelm the drain system and cause poor drainage. High-efficiency (HE) washers are especially sensitive to detergent amounts.

    What to do:

  • Run an extra rinse cycle with no detergent
  • Check that you're using the right amount of HE detergent
  • Consider switching to a lower-sudsing formula

    Drain Pipe Clog

Sometimes the problem isn't the washer at all — it's where the water goes. Your home's drain pipe can become clogged with soap residue, lint, and debris over time.

    Signs of drain pipe issues:

  • Water backs up into the standpipe
  • Slow drainage in nearby sinks or fixtures
  • Gurgling sounds when the washer drains

This may require a plumber rather than an appliance technician.

How to Manually Drain Your Washer

If you need to empty the washer before repairs:

    1. Locate the drain hose at the back of the machine

  • Position a bucket below the hose connection
  • Disconnect the hose from the standpipe
  • Lower the hose into the bucket to let gravity drain the water
  • You may need to empty the bucket multiple times

Some washers have an emergency drain tube near the filter — check your owner's manual.

    When Professional Help Is Needed

    Call a technician when:

    - The drain pump motor has failed

  • The lid switch needs replacement
  • You can't locate or clear the blockage
  • The washer makes unusual noises during draining
  • Water damage has occurred

Don't ignore a drainage problem. Standing water can lead to mold, mildew, and damage to your washer's components.
